Downsizing to a condo or apartment? The content of your 3000 square foot home just isn’t going to fit in your new 1200 square foot modern day condo. A living room that was 20’ x 30’ is now just 12’ x 14’ not to mention a serious décor changes may have to be undertaken. The question now is what we do with those Persian and Oriental Rugs that you’ve collected over the years. Here we have three things to consider.
1)Keep the small rugs. The smaller rugs can be a keepsake and a connection to the past, if you have a place in your new home, have the rugs washed and repaired if necessary and then find a spot and decorate around them. Small Persian Rugs can add a color dimension to what is usually a modern, sanitized and less homey condo environment. 2)Pass you rugs down to the next generation. It was common in the past to hear people mention how they inherited their Persian rugs from friends or family. It still happens, but not as much. Your children or relatives who appreciate Persian rugs and art will remember this thoughtful gesture. Every time they walk over the rug, they will think of you and your generosity. 3) Sell Your Oriental Rugs. If all else fails, you can find a buyer and sell your rugs. Find a dealer that can offer a current market evaluation (todays value) and that will be your starting point. You can post your rugs on classified site like Kijiji. Another option is seeking out a dealer who may be interested buying old oriental rugs. The rug would have to be old and unique for a dealer to consider buying the piece outright. An even better idea would be to find a dealer who you could consign the rug to. The right dealer would sell the rug at a fair market retail value and you would pay a commission after the rug has sold. Stay away from auctions. Auction houses attract buyers that pay little for anything. There is a lot of uncertainty when selling at auction and you will likely be disappointed at the outcome. If you decide to hang on to your rugs until you find a resolution, have them professionally washed and wrapped. Store them in a well lite and dry place where you can keep an eye on them. Never store them in a damp basement or storage unit. Contact us if you have any questions.
